A lovely someone sent me this poem yesterday, and, given my abject adoration of Rumi, I can't help but want to share it here.

[ THAT LIVES IN US ]

If you put your hands on this oar with me,
they will never harm another, and they will come to find
they hold everything you want.

If you put your hands on this oar with me, they would no longer
lift anything to your
mouth that might wound your precious land-
that sacred earth that is
your body.

If you put your soul against this oar with me,
the power that made the universe will enter your sinew
from a source not outside your limbs, but from a holy realm
that lives in us.

Exuberant is existence; time a husk.

When the moment cracks open, ecstasy leaps out and devours space;
love goes mad with the blessings, like my words give.

Why lay yourself on the torturer’s rack of the past and future?
The mind that tries to shape tomorrow beyond its capacities
will find no rest.

Be kind to yourself, dear- to our innocent follies.
Forget any sounds or touch you knew that did not help you dance.
You will come to see that all evolves us.

- J.L. Rumi

Indeed.

Rumi always plays with time and space and dancing in his poems, and I love the last lines in this, “…Forget any sounds or touch you knew that did not help you dance. You will come to see that all evolves us.”

Yes. the space time interplay is exquisite…in the knowledge of the resonance of the line, “The mind that tries to shape tomorrow beyond its capacities will find no rest,” My mind naturally gravitates toward shaping tomorrow to fatigue. And appreciating how the knowledgability of the past, present and future comes into play.  That is, with increased maturity I find as I really dive deep into present time I can’t help but become intrigued by the past and future consequences and our “innocent follies.” Further along, these follies allow us to tease out that which may not be really useful modes of knowledge and expands our collective awareness. Providing stepping stone along the evolutionary path for the mind to learn and grow.

I had heard of Rumi before, but I’d honestly never read anything yet. Thank you soooooo much… I’m going to go and find as much as I possibly can now.
Beautiful stuff.

Oh, thank you, all…

I find it so incredible that this poem was written nearly 800 years ago, and that it still speaks so, so clearly, and so directly. 800 years! Perhaps some things don’t change.

Yes, another Rumi fan here. His exuberant love of the Beloved is something we can each discover within our own true nature.

This thought came to me once:

“I am the Lover. I am the Beloved. I am the Loving. I am the Love.”

He makes that so clearly true of us all.

This thought came to me once, too:

I (every “I”) am a song and dance of God.

He makes that clear too.

Thank you for sharing more of Rumi !!!!

In the Love We Are,

OM Bastet
