what does 'enough' mean to you?

Posted on May 9th, 2008 by Siona : Synchronicity Coordinator Siona
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for May 06, 2008:

en eouf.
en oeuf.

It's a pun, I know, but I don't mean to be flip. When I think of 'enough,' I think of wholeness.

It took me over twenty years to learn what enough meant.

I used to feel that I was never enough: that I could never be good enough or intelligent enough or attractive enough or interesting enough, and that I could never feel safe enough or free enough or heard enough, and there was nothing that could convince me otherwise. (Worse, any comforting words to the contrary were evidence that I wasn't being heard, or seen.)

I was so empty then. (I'd feel awkward writing this, except I know there is likely a whole world of others out there who know, a bit, what it's like to have a terrifying and hungry gaping hole where one's sense of self should be.) And not only could I not be enough, I was incapable of saying that I'd had enough. I'd put up with anything.

It's funny now to look back on that wrong-headed view, and to see how having discovered that the internal black hole I'd clenched myself against was not a scary negative incomprehensible pit but rather the a positive endlessness, and wellspring of love (wrong-headed, did I say? wrong-hearted might be more accurate) has made me find enoughness everywhere. I am enough, and I have enough, and there's a sweet comfort in this.

Enough is enough, after all.

Cool. Lovely to 'hear' from you. Enough is as good as a feast, as my grandmother used to say. Eggs included. :D

Take care of you! sherri

Hi Siona,  I think most of us here have experienced exactly what you wrote about….the “not enough” syndrome.  Isn't it wonderful to find enough-ness everywhere?  And it's inspiring that so many people seem to be glimpsing it.     By the way, thanks for the great job you do in helping to create this Gaia space.  It's been life-expanding for me!

One reason I like Jungian theory for psychology is that it proposes that the goal of personal growth and health is wholeness not perfection.  The mainstream, marketing driven culture wants people feeling they are not enough and striving for the next thing that will fill this emptyness.  The shift you describe frees you from this matrix and puts you in another matrix that feels much better and is full of more possibilities.  The changing to a different matrix is almost impossible without  a nurturing holding environment such as Gaia.  Just as the old consumer, materialist matrix was created by social construction, the new life affirming matrix is also being created by social construction.  Thanks to Gaia for making this possible.  In some ways a shift like you described is made “more real” by other who understand and support the shift.

Pangea Day Phenomenon was an expression of Wholeness; we are enough, and “we are the ones we've been waiting for”:

“An incredibly inspiring event!! It brought me both tears of joy and sadness on several occasions. Best four hours spent in front of the television EVER!”

Dear Global TED Community,

The above comment is typical of the amazing torrent we've been receiving from all over the world in response to Pangea Day, the TED-backed global film event that broadcast on Saturday. You can read more of the comments below.

But did you see Pangea Day? What was your experience? And what would have made it better? Please write to us:  feedback@pangeaday.org" target="_blank">feedback@pangeaday.org. No one has ever put on an event quite like this before, so it's really important to me to hear the collective wisdom of the TED community.

If you missed it, or want to revisit, there's a one-hour highlights package here and all the films can be viewed on the pangeaday.org website. Or check out the LA Times' write-up.

A giant thank you to the many people in the TED community who made this day possible. It's been truly thrilling to see Jehane's TED Prize wish, that seemed so impossible two years ago, turned by you into dazzling reality.

This has been one of the most inspiring and beautiful events I have ever experienced.
Let's never forget what we all felt and experienced today.

Organizer DR from Dominican Republic
As the only organizer of a public event in the Dominican Republic I was pleased incredibly. The show exceeded my expectations completely…

karima saad from United Kingdom
I am speechless. But i am sure of one thing, that while i was attending Pangea Day in London, those 4 hours were felt as if i was part of the whole world as one community, rather than countries divided by borders.

Cmsilva from Portugal
We joined 45 in a private event in portugal. It was great. Next year we'll be more, for sure.

Carolyn from United States
Thank you for doing this. I laughed, I cried, I was enlightened, I was moved and touched and inspired. I watched almost the whole thing without getting up. Too bad I had to watch it alone…

Marina from Brazil
If I had to express my experience in words, I would not be able to. These were the best movies I have seen as an expression of art. And all the movies combined, just changed my way of thinking….

Marcosncosta from China
Loved the event. Hope next year it can be bigger and better.

Galleher from United States
The Alaskans gathered in Anchorage to be witness to this global campfire were inspired and appreciative

We all are “Pangea Day”. We all represent one earth, one life. Now is time to act !

RicardoSilva from Portugal
I've been using the internet since the 90's, but this is truly the first time that I feel that here, for brief hours, was a global community talking. I hear people from Canada to Pakistan, Shanghai, New Zealand, Chile, Romania…

CassieBrady from United States
I have always dreamed of a united world. I never knew how to act on my dreams, so I am so happy that it is finally happening. Imagine peace. Imagine a global community not separate countries. This is what the world needs.

Jacqui from Jamaica
I wish that this had been a public event here in Jamaica for people from all walks of society to see. It was truly a spectacular event , I sat riveted in front of the television.

Sana from United Arab Emirates
Hugs and love from United Arab Emirates…. It aint little…Its a big start considering we are thousands of miles apart and felt the same last night…

Light Sister from United States
Thank you all so much for this World Consciousness Raising Event. In my 59 plus years of life, I have never felt so hopeful about the direction this world is taking…

There are matters greater than that of political, economical and social nature…they are the environmental and humanitarian ones!!! it is clear that a change is required…and each and every one of us can make a difference.

Austria says thank you for all this work of love, passion, and devotion that went into realizing this dream come true.

Rhea from India
I am 23 years old and I just finished watching the Pangea Day broadcast. it's 4:00 am here and I couldn't go to bed without writing to you and telling you how beautiful, thought provoking it was.

Nabeelkarim from Pakistan
Just for starter…each one of us could just start by helping just one person/or doing something good…..once a day….

IBelieve from Canada
Hello World; What an amazing day! I laughed, shed tears of joy, smiles of love, and tears of compassion.

Sherryl from Australia
A powerful vision and enormous drive has brought Jehane's dream to reality. Confucius c. 500BC said; In his teaching the wise man …opens the way but does not take them to the place. Pangea Day has opened the way….

Much more feedback here and here.

Siona,

I came here thanks to Mushin but have no idea where he posted.  Anyway, I chose this blog because yesterday I found a mostly intact remains of a Wild Turkey egg that looked alot like your photo (except mine was speckled nicely).  I take that as a sign that I should read this.

I do know what it feels like to not feel like one is enough - I'm not totally out of that place but being here at Gaia does help me complete myself to a huge extent.  Thank you for the easy (because you love it) effort you go to, to provide for all of us this safe, loving space.

I do know when I've had enough and how to put a stop to such abuse of self.  Yet, I allow more than I would like when my nurturing self feels up to the challenge.

Thank you Ric for articulating what I also believe about wholeness contrasted with perfection and the acceptance of imperfection.  BTW, I believe the All that there Is uses our imperfections to do amazing work.  I like the idea of shifting the matrix from one place to another, a kind of reality shift that is gentle and almost imperceptible except that everything feels a bit better.

in total agreement with enough being wholeness, what I love is the diversity within that wholeness. the portions that go to make up the whole being widely varyable between people but all still hopefully whole.Somehow wholeness is not needy, what more can it ask for than to be whole and fulfilled
