"It is possible that the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community, a community practicing understanding and lovingkindness, a community practicing mindful living. And the practice can be carried out as a group, as a city, as a nation."
- Thich Nhat Hanh, The Next Buddha May Be A Sangha

Help

He spelled “Zaangha” wrong. :)
:)
I sent this a while back to my Sunday night “Daring to Live an Authentic Life” discussion group:
“The great benefit to gathering with other people in this way is that the teacher emerges as the meeting itself. Anyone with a question, or needing support, can offer that to the circle and let the circle become the teacher. There is no guru in the room, spread evenly like
hot butter. Rather, the body of the teacher is made up of everyone present and can only speak or move when all come together. The musician Peter Makena sings:
Whenever two or more of you are gathered
In the name of that which loves
That which is compassionate,
That which liberates
Great blessings shower on you,
Great blessings radiate from you.
Before the historical Buddha died, he reportedly predicted that a teacher named Maitreya would be the next to turn the wheel of dharma twenty-five hundred years after Buddha's death, which is about now. Maitreya is often pictured sitting in a chair, rather than cross-legged like the previous Buddha. Some have interpreted this to mean that a man named Maitreya would be born in our time, offering teachings and enlightening humanity while seated in a La-Z-Boy. But the word Maitreya means “the friend.” Today people like Vietnamese monk and author Thich Nhat Hanh feel that the Maitreya has come and is
actively teaching all over the world, as I write and you read these words. Today it is the spirit of friendship that turns the wheel of dharma, th spirit of honest and open investigation into and testimony to the truth. It is the gathering itself that is the guru, friends
meeting friends.” - page 377, from book ”The Translucent Revolution”
evelyn? You know what's extraordinary? I'd never heard of Ardagh's work before, but just last week I got a copy of The Translucent Revolution in the mail, and have just started reading it.
I suppose I should stop being surprised by these things.
but the surprise is half the fun of sychronicity, no?
just veered back here…hmmm, interesting 'synchroncity' (The Translucent Revolution is good; I tend to skim, but it's one of those books I actually read cover to cover)
what is synchroncity in a world that is one indivisible whole? in inextricable contiguous flux? Is not everything cause and effect of everything else?
yet seeing synchronicity in action has gone from amusing/surprising to sometimes paralyzing me in awe. synchronisitically i wrote today about surfing the edge between terror and exhilaration on just this topic - synchroncity & nonlinear nonrational noncognitive intuition
hmmm, it was easier when I could call it merely synchronicity but these days it has lept to level of minor miracles and plunges in grace and shameless disregard for mind-rules like time and space
everytime i'm accepting the level of preposterous (and there's a reason I quote Alice in Wonderland a lot today!) it rackets up another notch
ughh!!
so i suppose the only rational thing to do is simply ride the wave, and in the words of many sages including Arjuna Ardagh, play
Siona- yes, Yes, YES!…. I just read the quote from precious TNH and until this moment it had never dawned on me; the thought that a community, a sangha could be the form of the next enlightened buddha. And after reading it, I feel a resounding of course,! yes!, amen!, i'm tickled at the cleverness of the thought! The cheshire grin purring across my face…..
Evelyn… I'm a skimmer too which allows me to go through books quickly and in a timely fashion as I'm called to (and makes that speed reading course I took decades ago worth it ;-). I love the practice of going into a bookstore/ library and letting the books find me (and then skimming/digging for the gems). I'm a current surfer of intense in-betweens and appreciate your expression of your experience ;-) I also look forward to pulling my copy of The Translucent Revolution off the bookshelf and revisiting it….
Playfully,
Stacy xo
An absolute YES from over here too. This beautiful quote is going on my profile page :-) Thanks so much dear Siona.
Re The Translucent Revolution - it's also worth reading ”Getting Clear About Enlightenment - Not Just a Book Review of Arjuna Ardagh's The Translucent Revolution” by Tom Huston on WIE.
love,
